How does your family treat school? Does it run your family? Does your child believe you’re only satisfied with him if he makes good grades? Believe it or not, school is way too important in our society today. The Pairadocs discuss ways to limit its importance while still keeping it a priority.

'School is the single largest stresser in the kid's lives, in the parent's lives.'

'The problem with education tends to be us - the parents.'

'We are not-so-subtly communicating to our kids that success and money is the ultimate pursuit in life. Everything else pales in comparison to our kids succeeding and succeeding academically.'

'I want my children to walk out of my house with the idea of positional worth, whether they're president of the United States or a convicted felon. Their worth and value in my eyes never changes.'

'Praise effort, not grades. Discipline effort, not grades.'

Take a Seat on the Couch:

If this episode hits home for you. If you believe you and your family struggle with this particular area, read below for next steps for you and your family:

1. Apologize and seek the forgiveness of your child.

2. Speak with your spouse (or community - if not married) and figure out an "academic job description" where you hold you child accountable for academic effort, but cease to make it a daily battle.

3. Require mandatory study hall (at the kitchen table) if your child falls below minimum effort.

4. Speak to a trusted friend or counselor if you need further assistance.

If you do not have a counselor or someone you trust in your area, contact The Timothy Center at 512-331-2700 to set up a session with Jimmy, Josh or one of their licensed professionals.
